Effective October 1, 2021, a new federal law goes into effect requiring a new type of identification – REAL ID – for anyone 18 years and older flying within the United States or entering a Federal building that requires identification.
After 10/1/21, a standard license will NOT be acceptable to pass through domestic airport security checkpoints. You will need a REAL ID or another acceptable form of identification, such as a valid passport, federal government PIV card or US military ID.
REAL ID applications can be processed at AAA branch locations, but you will need to present certain documents to prove your identity. All Massachusetts members interested in obtaining a REAL ID should refer to the Massachusetts RMV website for complete information, start their application online, and see a list of acceptable documents.
