Massachusetts Registry of Motor Vehicles Services

AAA Members in Massachusetts can now take advantage of the following services at the following AAA offices during regular business hours: Greenfield, Hadley, Springfield and AAA West Springfield.

AAA offices do not provide all RMV services. If the service isn’t listed below, please visit a local RMV office.

Renewing your Massachusetts driver's license? New documents are required. Visit Mass.gov/RMV for info and to start your online application before visiting a AAA branch.

Due to increased transaction times and new RMV regulations, RMV services may not be available until closing time. We apologize for any inconvenience, and suggest you arrive early in the day.

The RMV has changed the way you get and renew your driver’s license and ID card.

If you have an active passport, and don’t mind carrying it, you will never need a REAL ID. After October of 2020, you will be asked for a passport or REAL ID when you fly in the U.S. or enter certain federal buildings.

The RMV suggests you renew your driver’s license or ID card as usual and then, decide if REAL ID is right for you in 2020.

Visit www.mass.gov/ID for more information or to take a quiz that will help you decide is Real ID is right for you.

If you renew your license before March 26, 2018, it is valid for five years. However, if you decide you want a new REAL ID prior to your next renewal, there is a $25 duplicate license fee. Remember that you do not need a REAL ID until October 2020, and even then you will never need a REAL ID if you have an active passport and don’t mind carrying it.
The RMV sends you a reminder when it’s time to renew your driver’s license or identification card.

As of March 26, 2018, you will need to select either a Standard driver’s license or ID card, or a REAL ID driver’s license or ID card. As of March 26, 2018, to get or renew any driver's license, ID card, or learner's permit, you need documentation showing United States citizenship or lawful presence as required by federal and state law.
Lawful presence means that a person is legally living in the U.S. according to federal immigration laws. All U.S. citizens and lawfully permanent residents have permanent lawful presence in the U.S. Non-U.S. citizens who are studying, working, or living temporarily in the U.S. may have temporary lawful presence that could vary in length.

Effective October 1, 2020, a new federal law goes into effect requiring a new type of identification – REAL ID – for anyone 18 years and older flying within the United States or entering a Federal building that requires identification.

After 10/1/20, a standard license will NOT be acceptable to pass through domestic airport security checkpoints. You will need a REAL ID or another acceptable form of identification, such as a valid passport, federal government PIV card or US military ID.

REAL ID applications can be processed at AAA branch locations, but you will need to present certain documents to prove your identity. All Massachusetts members interested in obtaining a REAL ID should refer to the Massachusetts RMV website for complete information, start their application online, and see a list of acceptable documents.
